PRP

What is PRP?

PRP uses your own blood to promote healing. We draw a small sample, concentrate the platelets using a centrifuge, and inject them into injured or arthritic joints. The concentrated platelets contain growth factors that stimulate tissue repair and reduce inflammation.

PRP is well-documented in research for treating osteoarthritis, tendon injuries, chronic joint pain, aesthetics, and soft tissue damage – especially for patients who want to avoid surgery or long-term steroid use.

What Makes Our Approach Different?

You don’t just get the injection.

While your blood is being processed, you’ll receive bodywork from our certified recovery specialist. This integrated approach supports better outcomes by preparing your tissues and optimizing your body’s healing response.

We use advanced technology with tailored treatment options.

We use the most advance system called Angel System. This allows us to tailor the treatment to you.

We can treat more sites in a single session than most orthopedic or sports medicine clinics. Depending on the amount of blood collected and the PRP yield, we can treat:

  • 1-2 large joints (shoulders, knees) plus up to 4 small joints (fingers, toes)
  • 1 large joint and 1-2 medium joints (elbows, ankles, wrists)
  • Large soft tissue areas (scars, injury sites, facial rejuvenation)
  • Muscle injuries or trigger points with platelet-poor plasma

You get time and attention.

Your appointment is 90 minutes, unlike typical, in-and-out clinics with a lot of wait time. This provides the unrushed space to get your questions answered, move through your procedure and receive recovery-accelerating bodywork.

Care in a supportive environment.

Our office is warm, welcoming, and intentionally designed to put you at ease. The treatment spaces are calm and thoughtfully arranged. Everything about the environment signals that this is a place where healing happens, not just procedures.

The setting has been intentionally designed to relax your nervous system so your body responds better to treatment.

Who This Is For

PRP works best for patients who:

  • Have a brand new injury and want to invest in preventing chronic changes
  • Have chronic joint pain that hasn’t fully responded to physical therapy, sauna, prolotherapy, osteopathy etc
  • Want a natural alternative to surgery or repeated steroid injections
  • Are dealing with tendon injuries, arthritis, or soft tissue damage
  • Value a holistic, thorough approach to healing

Setting realistic expectations:
PRP produces the best outcomes for newer injuries in active individuals. If you have advanced arthritis or very old scarring, you may experience more swelling and discomfort initially, but will likely still see benefits. PRP won’t make arthritis or scars disappear completely, but it’s an effective wellness treatment to slow progression and improve quality of life.

What to Expect: The 90-Minute Process

1. Intake and vitals (10 minutes)
Our phlebotomist will room you, take vitals, and review the process.

2. Examination and consultation (15 minutes)
Dr. Burns will examine your injury sites, discuss expected outcomes, and answer questions.

3. Blood draw (5 minutes)
Similar to donating blood – we’ll draw enough to create your platelet-rich plasma.

4. Bodywork session (25 minutes)
While your blood is being processed, you’ll receive therapeutic bodywork from a certified physical recovery specialist. This may include trigger point release, manual lymphatic drainage, or other treatment to support your recovery.

5. PRP injection, Post-care guidance and departure (15 minutes)

Dr. Burns will inject the concentrated platelets into your treatment sites. You will receive instructions for aftercare and be free to go.

Preparing for Your Appointment

48 hours before:

  • Stop taking NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin). These can interfere with platelet function.
  • Hydrate well and eat nutritious meals.

Day of appointment:

  • Wear clothing that allows easy access to injection sites (e.g., loose-fitting shorts for knee injections).
  • Bring water.
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early.
  • Consider bringing a driver if you have advanced joint disease or prefer not to drive after the procedure.

After your appointment:

  • Avoid NSAIDs for 2 months to allow full healing.
  • Physical therapy (PT) and a personalized exercise plan is strongly recommended. If you’ve done PT for this injury before, bring your plan. If not, we can provide referrals. Better outcomes occur when you actively work the area in a supportive way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments will I need?
Many patients see improvement after one session, but some conditions benefit from 2-3 treatments spaced several weeks apart. Dr. Burns will discuss this during your consultation.

Does it hurt?
You’ll feel the needle during injection, similar to other joint injections. Some patients experience soreness for 1-2 days afterward as the healing process begins.

Is PRP covered by insurance?
PRP is typically not covered by insurance and is considered an out-of-pocket expense. Additionally, as a direct primary care provider, we do not accept insurance.

Can you treat my hip?
We don’t perform hip injections in-office, but we can provide a referral.

What if I have very old scars?
Old scars may benefit from laser treatment first to improve PRP effectiveness. We can provide a dermatology referral if needed. This can be discussed on your scheduling call.

What if I’m late?
Please arrive on time. If you’re running late, we may not be able to complete your procedure if the delay is significant, as Dr. Burns may be with another patient.
