Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Support your body’s natural repair process using concentrated platelets from your own blood. PRP therapy can be used for joint, tendon, and soft-tissue injuries, including osteoarthritis and chronic pain.

A Different Approach to PRP

Can PRP Help You Heal?

PRP works best for patients who:

  • Have a recent injury and want to prevent chronic changes
  • Have chronic joint pain that hasn’t fully responded to physical therapy, sauna, prolotherapy, osteopathy etc.
  • Want a natural alternative to surgery or repeated steroid injections
  • Are dealing with tendon injuries, arthritis, or soft tissue damage
  • Value a holistic, thorough approach to healing

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Before Treatment

  • We will review your medical history, answer your questions, and walk you through what to expect.
  • Eat a healthy, nutrient-rich diet during the week leading up to your procedure to support your body’s healing response.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or meloxicam) and smoking for at least 48 hours before treatment. If you have questions about your medications or supplements, please contact us beforehand.
  • Avoid alcohol before the visit.

Day of Your Visit

  • Wear clothing that allows easy access to injection sites (e.g., loose-fitting shorts for knee injections).
  • Bring your existing PT plan, or we can provide a referral.
  • Bring water.
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early.
  • Consider bringing a driver if you have advanced joint disease or prefer not to drive after the procedure.

Recovery

  • Eat as healthy as possible for the week following the procedure.
  • Limit alcohol and avoid smoking.
  • Some patients notice temporary pain relief from the local anesthetic immediately after the procedure. Mild soreness, warmth, swelling, or stiffness are not common but may develop over the next day or two as your body’s healing response begins.
  • There is usually no downtime, but avoid strenuous activity for at least 1 day (or as Dr. Burns advises based on your individual case).
  • Avoid NSAIDs for 2 months to allow full healing.
  • Physical therapy is strongly recommended to maximize results.

PRP tends to produce the best outcomes for newer injuries in active individuals, while advanced arthritis or older injuries may still benefit but can respond more slowly.

Many patients see improvement after one session, but some conditions benefit from 2-3 treatments spaced several weeks apart. Dr. Burns will discuss this during your consultation.

You’ll feel the needle during injection, similar to other joint injections. Some patients experience soreness for 1-2 days afterward as the healing process begins.

PRP is typically not covered by insurance and is considered an out-of-pocket expense. Additionally, as a direct primary care provider, we do not accept insurance.

Old scars may benefit from laser treatment first to improve PRP effectiveness. We can provide a dermatology referral if needed. This can be discussed on your scheduling call.

Please arrive on time. If you’re running late, we may not be able to complete your procedure if the delay is significant, as Dr. Burns may be with another patient.

PRP works by stimulating your body’s natural healing response, so improvement is typically gradual rather than immediate. Some patients begin noticing changes within a few weeks, while others continue to improve over several months as tissues heal. Your timeline depends on the condition being treated, the severity of the injury, and your body’s healing response.

Both PRP and prolotherapy are regenerative treatments designed to stimulate your body’s natural healing process, but they work in different ways.

Prolotherapy uses a carefully selected solution to create a controlled healing response, encouraging the body to strengthen and repair injured ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses a concentrated portion of your own blood that contains platelets and growth factors to support tissue healing and regeneration.

Depending on your condition, Dr. Burns may recommend prolotherapy, PRP, or a combination of regenerative treatments. During your evaluation, she will discuss which approach is most appropriate for your specific injury, symptoms, and goals.

PRP is not the right treatment for every condition or every patient. The best candidates are determined through a comprehensive evaluation that considers your diagnosis, overall health, medical history, medications, and treatment goals.

During your consultation, Dr. Burns will determine whether PRP is likely to benefit your specific condition or whether another treatment option would be more appropriate. Her goal is to recommend the treatment that offers the greatest likelihood of meaningful improvement—not simply to perform a procedure.

Payment is collected after your appointment. Cash and check payments do not include a processing fee. A 5% processing fee applies to credit card payments.
